About the Enchanted Hoodoo Forest

The Enchanted Hoodoo Forest is located in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah, USA. It is situated in the southern part of the monument, about 45 minutes driving from the town of Kanab which is a popular access point for exploring this unique geological wonder. The Hoodoo Forest is distinct from (and, in our opinion, much more impressive than) the well-known Toadstools which are an easy “do-it-yourself” hike halfway between Kanab and Page.  Known for its striking sandstone formations, the Hoodoo Forest is a must-visit destination for geology enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers in the region.

How are Hoodoos created?

The region’s sedimentary rock layers, predominantly sandstone, were deposited over ancient seabeds and later uplifted. Hoodoos form when differential erosion occurs, where harder rock layers protect softer ones underneath. Wind, water, and frost action sculpt these intricate, mushroom-like formations. Depending on the layer in which hoodoos are forming, you may find the solemn earthen tones of Entrada and Dakota or a vivid red, orange, or even yellow in Navajo sandstone which adds to the mesmerizing beauty of the area. Hoodoos in Grand Staircase-Escalante create a surreal, Martian-like landscape, captivating visitors with their geological artistry.

How hard is it to access the Hoodoo Forest?

It takes most hikers 20-30 minutes from the trailhead to reach the heart of the Hoodoo Forest.  The hike to the Hoodoo Forest measures less than a mile in distance and is mostly flat – until the final 200 yards that unlock access to the Hoodoo Forest.  A short (4ft) steep drop requires mild scrambling followed by a steep hill descent with at times challenging footing.  This adventure is not advised for those who have difficulty with steep terrain or who have an extreme fear of heights.
