Mid-Day Horseback Ride: Cowboy-Guided Trail Along Castle Creek Canyon with Towering Cliffs and Exclusive Views

Midday in Moab is when most people are chasing crowds. You’ll be heading the other direction, into quiet canyon country.

Your experience begins at the Red Cliffs Ranch corral, where a professional wrangler pairs you with a calm, well-trained Quarter Horse and walks everyone through the basics at a comfortable pace. Once you’re settled in the saddle, the ride unfolds into Castle Creek Canyon, where the steady sound of flowing water and the shade of massive sandstone walls create a surprising sense of cool and calm.

You’ll cross the creek multiple times as the canyon opens and closes around you, revealing new perspectives with every turn. This trail is exclusive to riders on this tour, giving you a rare sense of seclusion even in the heart of Moab’s busy season.

When the ride concludes, you’ll return to the corral with time to relax, take photos, and soak in the ranch atmosphere before heading back to downtown Moab, refreshed, centered, and glad you chose a different rhythm for the day.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is this ride a good choice for beginners or kids?

Yes. This ride is perfect for first-time riders and families with kids ages 10 and up. The wranglers take time to match each rider with a gentle horse and help everyone feel comfortable before heading out on the trail.

What will we see on this shorter trail?

You’ll ride into Castle Creek Canyon where red cliffs tower above and the creek winds through the valley. It is a beautiful introduction to Moab’s canyon country and an unforgettable way to see the landscape up close.

How long will we be in the saddle?

Plan on about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes of actual riding, with a little extra time for orientation at the corral before you start.

Do we get time for photos along the way?

Yes. The pace is relaxed, and wranglers are happy to pause for photos at scenic spots. The canyon views make for incredible backdrops.

What are the age and weight requirements?

Riders must be at least 10 years old and 4’3” tall (52 inches / 133 cm), and the maximum rider weight is 220 pounds. These limits help ensure both rider and horse are comfortable throughout the ride.

Will a wrangler help if I’ve never ridden before?

Absolutely. Most guests have little or no riding experience. Your wrangler will guide you through the basics in the corral and stay close by on the trail.

What should I wear or bring for the afternoon ride?

Closed-toe shoes and long pants are best for comfort. Bring a water bottle, sunscreen, and a camera. Helmets are provided and required for riders under 16.

Are bathrooms available before or after the ride?

Yes. Facilities are available at the corral before you begin. There are no restrooms on the trail itself.

How far is Red Cliffs Lodge from downtown Moab?

Red Cliffs Lodge is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Moab. You’ll drive yourself to the lodge to check in at the stables.

What happens if the weather turns bad?

Rides may be delayed or rescheduled if weather makes the trail unsafe. If the ride is canceled due to weather, you’ll receive a full refund or the option to rebook.
